Hierochloe odorata, known as sweetgrass, is an aromatic herb native to northern Eurasia and North America. Its distinctive, sweet scent is due to the presence of coumarin, a natural chemical compound found in some plants.

When burned for healing or ritual purposes, the smoke from braided sweetgrass attracts positive energies and holds the space. The three braids represent love, peace and harmony; or mind, body, spirit. For optimum space purification, many people burn sage (the remover of stagnant and dissonant frequencies) prior to using sweetgrass. The sweetgrass counterbalances the intention of Grandfather Sage, attracting new energies after the old have been cleared.
